RESTORING WOMEN. RECLAIMIING LIVES
Mending Hearts Programs

How Our Programs Benefit Middle Tennessee
Mending Hearts has a strict policy for residents regarding women taking personal responsibility for the condition of their own lives and the path of destruction that addiction has on them. We do not tolerate the use of any illegal substance or alcohol by our residents while they are in our care. We require a life of sobriety and disciplined recovery.
A requisite for program completion is that each woman, in addition to remaining substance free, must acquire stable housing and gainful employment, as well as begin to restore familial and personal relationships where appropriate with people that were isolated or hurt as a result of addiction. Mending Hearts is providing a much needed service in Middle Tennessee by creating a safe environment for women to recover while providing supportive services to ensure long term success.

Why We Are Successful
Mending Hearts is successful because we have developed
programs that are founded on the principals of proven 12-Step recovery programs while taking into account that each woman is unique and will have unique needs and circumstances to address. Add to this that our leadership and management staff are all in recovery themselves and can relate first hand to what our residents face on a daily basis and know how to support them in the recovery process. Our residents learn an entirely new way of thinking and building healthy relationships and networks of support that endure long after they have completed our program. We allow women to stay in recovery residence with as long as is necessary, up to 1 year, provided that they remain in compliance with the program and are actively addressing their recovery and life situation—this means as long as is necessary to secure stable housing, gainful employment and a substance free lifestyle.

Every day a woman stays at Mending Hearts is another day that she
learns a lesson about respecting herself, her body and those around her.

Introducing Treatment for Co-occurring Disorders

Increasingly, the women served by Mending Hearts suffer both from addiction to drugs and alcohol and other mental health disorders -- "co-occurring disorders." Addressed in separate settings, mental health providers may miss alcohol and drug problems, and addiction counselors may miss mental illness. Treatment often occurs in silos without communication among providers.

The U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration cites integrated treatment as a Best Practice: "Integrated dual disorders treatment has been shown to work effectively for both disorders. People with dual disorders have a better chance of recovery from both disorders when ... provide(d) combined mental health and substance abuse treatments." Mending Hearts' 16-bed Residential Treatment Program treats co-occurring disorders in the same setting at the same time. The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities licensed 16 Mending Hearts beds in these categories: Mental Health Outpatient, Alcohol and Drug Halfway House, and Residential Detoxification (Medically Monitored), Alcohol and Drug Non-Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Facility, Alcohol and Drug Residential Rehabilitation Facility.

A physician board certified in psychiatry  serves as Medical Director and a psychiatric nurse practitioner  provides assessment and medication management. The work is accomplished by an interdisciplinary treatment team including a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a Program Director, a Case Manager, and round-the-clock awake monitors. All personnel receive ongoing supervision to become Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors from a Licensed Professional Counselor certified to provide LADAC training. Residents have a personal treatment plan developed around evidence-based practices and reviewed by the treatment team weekly; individual and group therapy, client-focused goals; case management; and a continuum of care emphasizing ultimate self-sufficiency.
