Mending Hearts is a residential recovery-oriented therapeutic
community for women who are or are it risk of becoming homeless
as a result of their addiction to drugs, alcohol or both.
Our facilities located in West Nashville are home to nearly
40 women who are in residence to address their addiction and
the current circumstances of their life. Many of these women
have spent time on the streets as prostitutes, time in our
jails as prisoners and time under bridges and on park benches
as homeless people. These women are ready to set their lives
straight, address their addictions and become law-abiding,
tax-paying productive citizens again. Mending Hearts is here
to help them on their path to personal redemption and recovery.
Mending Hearts has a strict policy for residents regarding
women taking personal responsibility for the condition of
their own lives and the path of destruction that addiction
has on them. We do not tolerate the use of any illegal substance
or alcohol by our residents while they are in our care. We
require a life of sobriety and disciplined recovery. A requisite
for program completion is that each woman, in addition to
remaining substance free, must acquire stable housing and
gainful employment, as well as begin to restore familial and
personal relationships where appropriate with people that
were isolated or hurt as a result of addiction. Mending Hearts
is providing a much needed service in Middle Tennessee by
creating a safe environment for women to recover while providing
supportive services to ensure long term success.
Mending Hearts is successful because we have developed a program
that is founded on the principals of proven 12-Step recovery
programs while taking into account that each woman is unique
and will have unique needs and circumstances to address. Add
to this that our leadership and management staff are all in
recovery themselves and can relate first hand to what our
residents face on a daily basis and know how to support them
in the recovery process. Our residents learn an entirely new
way of thinking and building healthy relationships and networks
of support that endure long after they have completed our
program. We allow women to stay in recovery residence with
as long as is necessary, up to 2 years, provided that they
remain in compliance with the program and are actively addressing
their recovery and life situation—this means as long as is
necessary to secure stable housing, gainful employment and
a substance free lifestyle. Every day a woman stays at Mending
Hearts is another day that she learns a lesson about respecting
herself, her body and those around her.
